SCRANTON, Pa. – Senior Jill Henson (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) became the sixth player in program history to record 200 career points and The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team (6-1, 6-1 Landmark) pulled away from Drew (3-3, 3-3 Landmark) in a 19-10 win over the Rangers on Wednesday afternoon at Weiss Field in Scranton.
Henson tallied an assist on a goal from junior Jaclyn McCusker (River Edge, N.J./River Dell) late in the first half to record her 200th point and now sits at 202 for her career.
The Royals sit second in the Landmark Conference with one regular season game remaining. All seven teams will qualify for the conference tournament this season which is slated to begin on Saturday, April 24.
Scranton scored the four goals of the game as sophomore Caroline Miller (Huntington, N.Y./Elwood-John H. Glenn) opened the scoring at the 25:16 mark of the first half and a tally from Henson made it 4-0 with 20:21 left in the opening stanza. The Rangers scored the next three goals to cut the lead to 4-3 with just over seven minutes left in the half, but the Royals responded by scoring the next four goals and sophomore Maggie Smith (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) made it an 8-3 game at the 3:58 mark. McCusker's afore-mentioned goal gave the hosts a 9-5 lead at halftime.
Drew trailed 11-7 with 25:06 left in the game, but that was the closest the Rangers would get the rest of the way. Smith kicked off a four-goal run for Scranton and senior Raegen Dunn (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) scored consecutive woman down goals as the latter opened up a 15-7 advantage with 15:21 remaining. Following a Rangers goal, the Royals scored four of the next five and Smith's goal with 2:02 to play closed the scoring for the hosts and made it a 19-9 game for the time being.
Henson led the way offensively for the Royals with seven points on four goals and three assists, while Smith, freshman Erin Reich (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and junior Jennifer Williams (Branchburg, N.J./Somerville) registered a hat trick apiece. Dunn and McCusker had a pair of goals each and other goal scorers for Scranton were Miller and senior Bridget Lalley (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge).
Junior Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J./Morris Catholic) had a career-high 10 draw controls for the Royals and also added four caused turnovers and three ground balls. Smith tallied four draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover, while McCusker had two ground balls and two draw controls.
Senior Lauren Devlin (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) made a season-high 13 saves in goal for the Royals.
Allie DiDario paced Drew with five goals in the losing effort.
The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team closes out the regular season at Juniata on Saturday afternoon with start time slated for 2 p.m.
