SCRANTON - After a slow start, The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team outscored Susquehanna, 8-2, in the second and third quarters to race to an 11-6 Landmark Conference victory on Saturday at Weiss Field.
With the win, the Royals moved to 4-1 overall and in the Landmark, while Susquehanna dropped to 2-6 and 2-4 in the Landmark with the defeat.
Before opening face-off, the Royals honored their 2021 senior class - Brian Dignen (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown East), Ryan Dombroski (Franklin, Mass./Xaverian Brothers), Shayne Fallon (West Deptford, N.J./West Deptford), Michael Grant (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), Chris Harris (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), Jalen Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan), Danny Mallay (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side), and Collin Purdy (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough).
But, to start, offense was tough to come by for either team, as after one quarter, the match was tied, 1-1. The second quarter saw both teams open it up on offense, as the period came to a head with the Royals leading, 4-3, late.
With 20 seconds left, Scranton started one last attack and cashed in, as freshman Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) scored with two seconds left in the first half to give the Royals a 5-3 lead at intermission.
The late first half goal seemed to jumpstart the Royals offense, as Scranton dominated the third quarter with a 4-0 scoring run to take a 9-3 lead into the final period.
The six-goal deficit proved to be too much for the River Hawks to come back from, as the closest they came to the Royals lead in the final period was four goals on two separate occasions.
Up 10-6 late in regulation, the Royals finished off the day with 2:42 left, as sophomore Christopher Crapanzano (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) tallied the final score of the day to cap a successful senior day for Scranton.
Overall, Crapanzano led the Royals offense with a hat trick, marking the third time in his first season in the Scranton program that he has scored three goals in a game.
Junior Mike Bouhall (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) had two goals and an assist, while McAree, Purdy, juniors Sean Crotty (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) and Cole Lukasiewicz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), sophomore Matt Solleder (Ramsey, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) and freshman Alex Eglitis (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) all scored goals for the Royals.
In the assist column, junior Finn Duignan (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had two to lead the team, while Purdy led the squad in ground balls with eight. Purdy, the Royals' face-off man the entire game, won 9 times throughout the contest, as well.
Finally, in goal, Fallon made 11 saves (on 17 shots) to lead a strong afternoon for the Scranton defense, who held Susquehanna at bay the entire day.
The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, as they take on Drew in their home regular season finale. Opening face-off is set for 4 p.m. at Weiss Field.
