CLARKS SUMMIT, PA. - The University of Scranton men's tennis team opened a 2-1 lead after doubles, then won five of the six singles matches contested to coast to a 7-2 win over Landmark Conference foe Catholic on Saturday at Birchwood Tennis Club.
With the win, the Royals moved to 3-2 overall and in the Landmark, while Catholic dropped to 3-2 (both overall and in the Landmark) with the defeat.
In doubles, Scranton got off to a great start, winning in the top two spots to go up 2-0 quickly on the Cardinals.
First, at number one, seniors Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and James Harrington (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) etched an 8-5 win, which was followed by an 8-6 victory by the sophomore tandem of Patrick O'Mara (Pleasantville, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Nathan Tauber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth Area).
After suffering a loss at number three doubles to make it a 2-1 match, Scranton controlled singles, sweeping play in straight sets in the top five spots to secure the conference victory.
At one, McGurrin was a winner, 6-2, 6-0, while Harrington was victorious at number two, 6-0, 7-6. Tauber became a two-time winner on the day with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win at number three, while O'Mara was a 6-2, 6-4 victor at number four.
Rounding out the singles victories for Scranton was freshman Jason Budrys (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park), who won 6-4, 6-0 at number five.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team returns to action on Sunday, as they travel south to Goucher for another Landmark Conference match. Action gets underway at 1 p.m.
