SCRANTON - On a day in which he was honored, senior Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep), along with senior James Harrington (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep), did not lose a set at either doubles or singles to lead The University of Scranton men's tennis team to a 7-2 victory over Moravian on Saturday at Royal Courts in Landmark Conference play.
The victory, which was Scranton's third straight, pushed the Royals' record to 5-2 overall and in the Landmark. Moravian fell to 4-5 overall and 2-5 in the Landmark with the defeat.
The day kicked off for Scranton in style in doubles, where the Royals won in the top two spots to take a 2-1 lead into singles.
First, at the top spot, McGurrin and Harrington rolled to an 8-0 win. This was followed by an 8-3 victory at number two by sophomores Patrick O'Mara (Pleasantville, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Nathan Tauber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth Area) to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.
After suffering a loss on a tie-break at number three doubles, the Royals dominated singles, taking five of the six matches contested to roll to a five-point victory over the Greyhounds.
At number one, McGurrin rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win, which was the exact same score Harrington won his match in the number two spot. At number four, O'Mara was also a 6-0, 6-0 victor, while junior Sal Sullivan (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 win in the number five position.
The Royals rounded out the day with another shutout win, as freshman Jason Budrys (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park) was 6-0, 6-0 winner in the number six singles spot.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team finishes off their regular season on Sunday, as they host Juniata in Landmark Conference action at Birchwood Tennis Club. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
