WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore right-hander Daniel Johnson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata) extended his scoreless streak to 18 innings and The University of Scranton baseball team (8-6, 8-6 Landmark) split a doubleheader with the Catholic University Cardinals (9-7, 9-7 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at Talbot Field in Washington, D.C.
Johnson tossed six scoreless inning as the Royals took the nightcap by a score of 4-0 after Catholic rallied to take game one, 5-3.
Game One
The Cardinals scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 5-3 lead and held on for the win in game one.
Tighe Watson drove in the tying run with an RBI single and a wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score in the inning.
Sophomore right-hander Hunter Ralston (Duryea, Pa./Pittston Area) was dealt the loss for the Royals after allowing four runs on six hits to go along with three walks and two strikeouts in 5 1/3 IP. Tucker Alch gave up three runs (one earned) on nine hits while walking two and fanning eight in the complete game victory for Catholic.
Scranton grabbed an early lead with two runs in the top of the first as a throwing error brought home the first run of the game and senior Kevin Johnson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) plated a run with an RBI single. Catholic got a run back in the home half of the first to cut the lead to 2-1 before the Royals answered with a run in the top of the second as freshman John Zarnowski (East Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph's) singled to lead off, advanced to second on a sac bunt, went to third on a single and scored on an RBI single from senior Connor Harding (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal).
Harding (2-4, RBI, R) and junior Jake Lisicky who was 2-4 with a run scored both had multi-hit games for head coach Mike Bartoletti's squad.
Game Two
Johnson (3-0) scattered seven hits while walking one and fanning five over six shutout frames to lead the Royals to the 4-0 win in game two. Junior southpaw Ryan Heiser (New Milford, N.J./Saint Joseph Regional) fanned a pair in a scoreless seventh inning to preserve the shutout.
The right-hander now holds an 18 inning scoreless streak over his last three starts and has allowed just one earned run in 20 1/3 IP this season.
Game two was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Scranton loaded the bases with one out, freshman Corey Zientek (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton Area) singled to left and an error charged to Cardinals' LF Peter Giombetti allowed all three runs to score.
In the fifth inning, sophomore Justin Pinckert (Somerville, N.J./Immaculata) led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a single and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from junior Dan Crossan (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll).
Nick Marini was dealt the loss for Catholic after giving up four runs (one earned) on eight hits while walking four and fanning five in seven innings.
Pinckert and junior Tyler Kirsten (Wallenpaupack, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) were both 2-3 in the nightcap to lead the way offensively for the Royals.
The two teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Volpe Field. First pitch of game one is slated for 12:30 p.m.
