CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. - The University of Scranton men's tennis team finished off their 2021 spring campaign on Sunday with a dominating 9-0 victory over Landmark Conference foe Junaita in a match played inside at Brichwood Tennis Club.
With the win, Scranton ends the regular season with a 6-2 mark overall and in the Landmark, as the Royal will enter next weekend's Landmark Conference playoffs winners of four straight. Juniata fell to 1-7 overall and in the Landmark with the loss.
To start in doubles, Scranton won all three matches contested to take a 3-0 lead entering singles.
At number one, the tandem of seniors Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and James Harrington (West Chester, Pa,/Malvern Prep) were 8-2 victors, while in the two and three slots, the Royals rolled to a pair of 8-0 wins.
In the number two spot for Scranton was sophomores Patrick O'Mara (Pleasantville, N.Y./Archbishop Stepinac) and Nathan Tauber (Bethlehem, Pa./Nazareth Area), while in the third slot was junior Sal Sullivan (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) and sophomore Steven Prosperino (Brewster, N.Y./North Salem Central).
It was more of the same in singles action, with the Royals winning each match contested in straight sets.
At the top spot, McGurrin ended the regular season with an 8-0 mark in singles action with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Meanwhile, Harrington also moved to 8-0 in singles on the year with a shutout 6-0, 6-0 win in the number two position of the line-up.
At number three singles, Tauber was a 6-0, 6-1 victor, while O'Mara was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at number four. Rounding out the line-up for the Royals was Sullivan at number five, who won 6-0, 6-1, and freshman Jason Budrys (East Hanover, N.J./Hanover Park), who finished the sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win at number six singles.
The University of Scranton men's tennis team now awaits where they will be seeded in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs, which begin on Saturday with quarterfinal action.
