SCRANTON - With The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team playing their first game at home in over a year, visiting Catholic spoiled the Royals' homecoming at Weiss Field on Saturday, as the Cardinals used a big third quarter to pull away in an eventual 24-10 Landmark Conference victory.

The game started out slow for both teams, as Catholic (1-0, 1-0 Landmark) took their first lead of the game with 4:48 to go in the first quarter at 2-1. After another Cardinal goal made it 3-1, senior Sean Crotty (Long Beach, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored for Scranton (1-1, 1-1 Landmark) to make it a 3-2 game entering the second quarter.

There, the Cardinals scored the first three goals of the period to go up 6-2 with 5:29 to go in the first half. That four-goal advantage held for Catholic into intermission, as the Cardinals held an 8-4 edge over Scranton at the half.

But, the third quarter proved to be the decisive period in the contest, as the Cardinals scored early and often throughout a 15-minute scoring barrage. When the horn sounded at the end of the period, Catholic had outscored Scranton, 14-2, in the period to take an insurmountable 22-6 lead entering the fourth. In the final period, Scranton outscored Catholic, 4-2, but it was too little, too late, as the Cardinals walked out of Weiss Field with a 14-goal win.

Overall for Scranton in the defeat, senior Danny Mallay (South Hempstead, N.Y./South Side) scored two goals, while eight other Royals got on the scoring sheet with a single goal.

They were: Crotty, junior Cole Lukasiewicz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), sophomore Nick Donato (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), junior Jack Leghart (Farmingdale, N.Y./ Kellenberg Memorial), freshman Alex Eglitis (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), sophomore Christopher Crapanzano (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), sophomore Nicholas Consoli (South Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury), and freshman Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset).

In ground balls, Crapanzano led the way with eight, while Lukasiewicz had six. Catholic was led in the win by Kevin Crowley, who scored eight goals.

The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Moravian in Landmark Conference action. The match begins in Bethlehem at 4 p.m.
