Box Score

SCRANTON - Freshman Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) put together the best game of his young career, scoring four goals, as the third-seeded University of Scranton men's lacrosse team scored early and often in a 21-1 victory over sixth-seed Drew on Saturday in the 2021 Landmark Conference Quarterfinals at Weiss Field.

With the win, Scranton (5-2) moves on to the Landmark Semifinals, where they will play second-seeded Elizabethtown (5-2) on Wednesday on the road. Drew finishes off the year with an 0-6 ledger with the defeat.

From the start on Saturday, the Royals controlled play, taking a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. Drew answered with a score to start the second, which was ironically their only score of the entire match, as the Royals finished the first half on a 4-0 run to take an 8-1 lead into intermission.

The second half saw the Royals continue their scoring barrage, as they tallied six goals in the third quarter and seven more in the fourth, while at the same time keeping the Rangers off the scoreboard for the entire second half.

When the dust settled, the Royals had collected a 20-goal victory, one their biggest in recent memory. It marked the first time since an 18-1 win over Penn State-Abington in 2010 that Scranton had only allowed one goal in a contest, as well.

Overall McAree led the way on offense with his four-goal effort. The freshman also had an assist in the victory, as well.

Elsewhere, senior Jalen Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) had a hat trick with three goals, while four players scored two goals, apiece - juniors Cole Lukasiewicz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) and Jack Leghart (Farmingdale, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial), sophomore Oliver Lay (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Lunlowe) and freshman Kyle Bennett (Havertown, Pa./Haverford).

Rounding out the scoring sheet for the Royals were freshman Joe Boyle (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's), sophomores Christopher Crapanzano (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), Dillon Malyniak (Commack, N.Y./Commack), and Christopher Goria (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East), and juniors Mike Bouhall (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and Finn Duignan (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh), who all had one goal, each.

In the assists column, freshman Jed Cappuccino (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) had two, while in ground balls, senior Collin Purdy (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) led the way with nine. Purdy also went an impressive 14-of-18 in faceoffs in the victory, as well.

Defensively, the Royals caused 14 turnovers in the victory, as senior goalie Shayne Fallon (West Deptford, N.J./West Depford) had another strong game, making 11 saves in 45 minutes of play.

The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday, as they head to Elizabethtown for the Landmark semifinals. In the regular season match-up between the squads on Apr. 10, the Royals used a late comeback to take a 10-9 decision over the Blue Jays at Weiss Field.

More on the semifinal match-up will be posted on athletics.scranton.edu as the week progresses.
