MADISON, N.J. - An outstanding season for The University of Scranton men's tennis team came to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the second-seeded Royals fell to top-seeded Drew, 5-2, in the 2021 Landmark Conference Championship match.
With the defeat, the Royals finished their 2021 season with an 8-3 record, while Drew improved to 10-0 overall and move onto the 2021 NCAA Division III Tournament, earning the Landmark's automatic bid into the field with the win.
The day kicked off well for the Royals, as the senior tandem of Tarquin McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Prep) and James Harrington (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) rolled to an 8-2 victory to give Scranton a 1-0 lead. With the win, Harrington and McGurrin finish the season with an 8-1 record at doubles.
But, Drew came back in two and three doubles with victories by scores of 8-2 and 8-1, respectively, to take a 2-1 lead into singles.
In singles action, Drew captured a straight-set win at number three (6-3, 6-1), which was followed up by a win by Harrington in the number two position, 6-0, 6-3, that cut the Drew lead down to 3-2. With the victory, Harrington finished the season unbeaten in singles action (12-0).
However, the Rangers clinched the conference title with victories at number four (7-6 (7-5), 6-1), and number one (3-6, 6-1, 6-1) over the Royals.
The match was the last for McGurrin, who finishes his career with 38 singles victories and 37 doubles triumphs, which both rank in the top ten all-time in the history of the Royals' program.
