Women's Tennis Drops 5-4 Heartbreaker to Moravian in Landmark Championship Match

Results

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In a match that took more than nine hours, The No. 2 seed University of Scranton women's tennis team (8-2) dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to the top seeded Moravian Greyhounds (10-0) in Sunday's Landmark Conference Championship match at the Briedegam Fieldhouse in Bethlehem.

The Royals see an excellent season come to end at 8-2, while Moravian advances to the NCAA Division III Tournament by virtue of earning the Landmark's automatic bid.

The match came down to the sixth singles match, but junior Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) dropped a three set decision to the Greyhounds' Madison Figiel (6-4, 2-6, 1-6) to give the hosts the 5-4 win.

Scranton was able to grab an early 3-0 lead with victories in all three doubles matches as senior Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock)/sophomore Lily Nowak (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton Area) picked up an 8-7 win in No. 1 doubles and graduate student Emily Kelly (West Chester, Pa./B. Reed Henderson)/senior Tatiana Klacko (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Prep) remained unbeaten with an 8-3 victory at the second doubles flight. In No. 3 doubles action, the duo of Loughlin and senior Kristen Denniston (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) recorded an 8-5 win.

Moravian rallied though as they took the top three singles matches to even things at three apiece before Kelly gave the Royals the lead back with a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Julianne Cassidy at No. 4 singles. Denniston fell in three sets to the Greyhounds' Kristen Cassidy (7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 0-6) in No. 5 singles to even the match once again.

This marked the final match in a Royals uniform for Denniston, Kelly, Klacko and Lindsay Roberto (Princeton, N.J./Notre Dame). Over the past four seasons, the Class of 2021 led the women's tennis program to 40 victories and a second round appearance in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.
