WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's tennis teams saw three individuals win singles titles and also captured three doubles titles on Saturday at the King's Fall Invitational that was played at the Kirby Courts in Wilkes-Barre.
Freshman Mayjah Jean-Pierre (Linden, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) captured the No. 1 singles flight for the Royals with straight set victories in the semifinals and finals including a 6-2, 7-5 win over Renay Charley of Manhattanville, while junior Lily Nowak (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton Area) won the No. 2 singles title with an 8-5 win over the Valiants' Bea Pretnar.
In No. 3 singles, senior Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Manhattanville's Kelsey Ulzheimer in the finals after a thrilling 7-5, 6-3 victory over Misericordia's Lydia Barbour in the semifinals.
At the No. 7 singles flight, freshman Julia Nocentino (Mantua, N.J./Kingsway Regional) and sophomore Lydia Grossman (Honesdale, Pa./Honesdale) both picked up victories in the quarterfinals and semifinals to advance to the finals which was declared a no result.
In No. 1 doubles play, the duo of Jean-Pierre and Loughlin rolled to an 8-2 victory over Lycoming's Hannah Seebold and Madison Heller. At the No. 2 doubles spot, Nowak and sophomore Brigid O'Mara (Pleasantville, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic Prep) were 8-1 winners in the finals over a duo from Arcadia.
Sophomores Maddy Abood (Plainfield, N.J./Union Catholic) and Angela Lovato (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Hawthorne Christian Academy) rounded out the victories on the day for Scranton with an 8-5 win over Misericordia's Nicole Pangiochi and Samantha Atcavage in No. 4 doubles play.
The Royals return home to host Marywood in a dual match on Wednesday afternoon with first serve set for 4:30 p.m.
