GRANTHAM, Pa. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team (1-0) opened its fall season in style with a 6-3 victory over the Messiah Falcons (0-1) in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Criste Courts in Grantham.
The Royals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles play. At the first doubles flight, the duo of junior Lily Nowak (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton Area) and graduate student Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock) picked up an 8-0 win, while senior Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) and sophomore Angela Lovato (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) notched an 8-6 victory in No. 2 doubles. At the third doubles flight, sophomore Lydia Grossman (Honesdale, Pa.) and freshman Julia Nocentino (Mantua, N.J./Kingsway Regional) registered an 8-4 win over the Messiah duo of Hannah Murray and Sarah Fleming.
Nowak picked up a straight set (6-2, 6-3) victory in No. 1 singles over the Falcons' Kaci Conjack and Campo was a 7-5, 6-2 winner in No. 2 singles. Loughlin also registered a straight set victory in No. 3 singles by taking a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Rachel Schaeffer.
The University of Scranton women's tennis team returns to action at SUNY Oneonta on Friday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m.
