ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Scranton women's tennis team (6-4) held an early lead after doubles play, but ultimately fell short in a 6-3 loss to the Division II Bentley Falcons (5-9) in the team's final match of Spring Break on Friday morning in Orlando.
At No. 1 doubles, the duo of freshman Mayjah Jean-Pierre (Linden, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's)/junior Lily Nowak (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton Area) picked up a thrilling 8-7 win over Bentley's Maria Mella/Adriana Hiraldo, while senior Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central)/graduate student Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock) notched an 8-6 victory against Anna Lang and Remy LeSage in second doubles action.
The Royals led 2-1 headed into singles play, but Bentley took five of the six singles matches to secure the 6-3 victory. In No. 3 singles play, Campo was a straight set winner (6-2, 6-0) over LeSage. Elsewhere for the Royals, both Jean-Pierre and sophomore Maddy Tratthen (Olyphant, Pa./Scranton Prep) fell just short in three-set heartbreakers at No. 1 and No. 5 singles, respectively.
Scranton will return to the courts on Saturday, Mar. 26 for the opening match of Landmark Conference play at Moravian with first serve slated for 1 p.m.
