CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – Freshman Mayjah Jean-Pierre (Linden, N.J./Gill St. Bernard's) and senior Claire Loughlin (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Central Catholic) both won singles matches and teamed up for a doubles win to propel The University of Scranton women's tennis team to a 5-4 win over Kutztown on Saturday at Birchwood Tennis & Fitness Club.
Jean-Pierre and Loughlin rolled to an 8-0 win at no. 2 doubles, but it was Scranton's only doubles victory. But the Royals (4-2) won the top four singles matches to pull out the victory.
Jean-Pierre was victories at no. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, while graduate student Marissa Campo (Green Lane, Pa./Christopher Dock) at no. 3 and Loughlin at no. 4 both posted 6-2, 6-2 victories.
The clutch singles win for Scranton came at the no. 2 spot where junior Lily Nowak (Freeland, Pa./Hazleton Area) rallied from a 1-6 first-set loss to pull out a 6-3 win in the second set and a 10-7 win in the tiebreaking final set.
The women's tennis team will next head to Orlando, Fla. on spring break, where they will open up the trip by taking on Macalester on Sunday, March 13, at a time to be announced.
