Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 2, 2022) -- Freshman Grace Lane (Long Beach, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Academy) notched her third straight hat trick for The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team in a 17-8 loss to No. 17 Catholic University on Saturday afternoon at Carlini Field.
The Cardinals started the game off strong, scoring the opening three goals of the game in the early stages of the first period. Lane responded at the 6:12 mark when she converted on a free position attempt for the first score of the game for Scranton. Catholic closed out the opening quarter with another goal to hold a 4-1 lead headed into the second.
Sophomore Devyn Tanajewski (Ringwood, N.J. / Lakeland Regional) got things going for the Royals in the second period as she found the back of the net off a free position attempt with just under two minutes off the clock. Lane followed suit with her second goal of the game, cutting the Cardinal lead to just one with ten minutes remaning in the second quarter. Following another Catholic goal, junior Caroline Miller (Huntington, N.Y. / Elwood-John H. Glenn) found an answer for Scranton. In the late stages of the second period, both sides exchanged blows as senior Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) finished out the half on a high note for Scranton with a late goal to bring the score to 6-5 in favor of the Cardinals.
Following a goal from the Cardinals to begin the second half, Lane and senior Jennifer Williams (Branchburg, N.J. / Somerville) scored back-to-back goals to tie up the game at 7-7. Catholic then scored consecutive goals of its own to retain its two goal cushion. Tanajewski closed out the busy third period with a late goal to cut the Cardinal lead to 9-8 headed into the fourth.
The Royals were blanked in the fourth period as Catholic scored eight unanswered goals to secure the 17-8 win. Three Cardinals finished with hat tricks while Lane posted the lone hat trick for Scranton. Freshman Lauren Boldis (Merrick, N.Y. / Sanford H. Calhoun) recorded eight saves for the Royals while senior Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J. / Morris Catholic) won six draw controls.
The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday when they host Widener at Weiss Field at 7:00 PM.
