Box Score SCRANTON, Pa. – Big middle innings for Lebanon Valley proved costly as The University of Scranton baseball team (23-8-1) dropped a 14-6 decision to the Dutchmen (24-13) in non-conference action on a rainy Tuesday night at Volpe Field in Scranton.
Things were all tied at six apiece in the top of the sixth when a two-run shot from Mike Bulgia broke the tie and LVC went on to add three more runs in the seventh to take an 11-6 lead.
Junior right-hander Kevin Donovan (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) tossed an inning of relief for the Royals, but was dealt the loss after allowing the two runs in the sixth. Brendan Landry gave up three runs (two earned) in two innings of work for the Dutchmen to record the win.
The Dutchmen led 2-0 after the top of the first inning, but Scranton took the lead with three runs in the home half of the third as senior Tyler Kirsten (Wallenpaupack, Pa./Wallenpaupack Area) drew a bases-loaded walk and graduate student Kevin Johnson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central) knocked in a run with a sac fly. The Royals added an unearned run in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead for the time being.
LVC regained a 6-4 edge with four runs in the fifth including a two-run double from Luke Blair before the Royals once again answered with two runs in the home half to tie things at six. Johnson plated a run with an RBI infield single and senior Dan Crossan (Media, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) came through with a sac fly later in the frame.
Senior right-hander Josh Lydon (Shavertown, Pa./Dallas) got the start for the hosts and surrendered four runs on four hits while fanning five over 4 1/3 IP in a no-decision. For LVC, Tommy Moore Jr. gave up three runs (two earned) on one hit to go along with three walks and two strikeouts in three innings.
Five different players tallied a hit in the contest for the Royals as Johnson was 1-3 with two RBI in the contest.
The University of Scranton baseball team closes out an eight-game homestand on Wednesday with a non-conference clash against DeSales. First pitch at Volpe Field is slated for 5 p.m.
