Box Score SCRANTON, PA (April 27, 2022) -- Senior Emily Schum (East Hanover, N.J. / Morris Catholic) became the third Royal in program history to notch 100 career caused turnovers on Wednesday afternoon at Weiss Field as The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team earned its sixth consecutive win over Cabrini, 12-7.
The Royals (11-5) went down early as Cabrini (9-6) scored the opening goal of the game in the first two minutes of action. Freshman Grace Lane (Long Beach, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Academy) provided a response for Scranton in the middle stages of the opening period as she converted on a free-position attempt to tie the game up at 1-1. The Cavaliers added a late goal at the end of the first period to hold a one goal advantage headed into to the second quarter.
The Royals posted a dominant second period, outscoring Cabrini 5-1. Lane scored back-to-back goals to get things rolling for Scranton and secure an early hat trick. Sophomore Kayleigh Stalter (Lynbrook, N.Y. / Lynbrook) assisted on Lane's third goal and followed up with a goal of her own to give the Royals a 4-2 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the second period. Senior Halle Conklin (Point Lookout, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) added to the tally with a free-position goal of her own before sophomore Erin Reich (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) capped off the period with a last minute goal to give Scranton a 6-3 lead at halftime.
The Royals kept things rolling to start the second half as Conklin converted on another free-position attempt to give her squad a four goal cushion. Scranton extended its lead to five headed into the fourth quarter as they led 9-4.
Stalter and freshman Allie Halfpenny (Mount Laurel, N.J. / Lenape) each scored their second goal of the game on free-position attempts to start the fourth period. Cabrini made a late push in the fourth quarter, but it was not enough as Scranton held strong and earned a 12-7 non-conference victory over the Cavaliers.
Schum tied her career-high with six caused turnovers in the game, while recording eight ground balls. Lane added an assist to her three goals, for a game-high four points, while fellow freshman Lauren Boldis (Merrick, N.Y. / Sanford H. Calhoun) made five saves on 12 shots faced.
The Royals will return to Landmark action this Saturday when they host Juniata at 1:00 PM at Weiss Field. Prior to the game we will take time to honor the five graduating seniors on the team.
