LA PLUME, PA (January, 26, 2022) -- The University of Scranton wrestling team earned a pair of victories in a local tri-match at Keystone College against the Giants and Bergen Community College on Thursday evening.
The Royals started the night off with a dominant 42-6 win over Bergen before taking down Keystone 42-13 in the final match of the evening. With the wins, Scranton moves to 5-7 in dual matches on the season.
Scranton vs. Bergen
- Sophomore Justin Schifter (Manalapan, N.J. / Manalapan) and senior Michael Garcia (Verona, N.J. / Verona) got the Royals off to a hot start with back-to-back pins at 125 and 133.
- Scranton then recieved a pair of decision wins at 141 and 149 from freshmen Shkeb Nadir (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton) and Kosta Mavirkidis (Warren, N.J. / Paramus Catholic) to take a 18-0 lead over Bergen.
- Following a forfeit win at 157, senior Jeremiah Oakes (Scranton, Pa. / Scranton) earned a pin on Dylan Toro to add six more points to the tally for the Royals.
- Senior Hunter Marhan (Long Branch, N.J. / Long Branch) capped off the commanding victory with a pin in just 1:23 in the heavyweight bout over Shiv Patel.
Scranton vs. Keystone
- After a pair of forfeits in favor of Scranton at 125 and 133, Nadir picked up a pin over Justin Santiago of Keystone to give the Royals an early 18-0 lead.
- Oakes picked up his second pin of the night as he took down Noah Atkins in 1:19 to put Scranton up 24-7.
- At 174, senior Will Laughlin (Lansdale, Pa. / North Penn) pinned Alex Norton in 1:18.
- The Royals added two more forfeit wins as they went on to beat the Giants 42-13.
The wrestling team returns to action next Tuesday when they host Delaware Valley in the John Long Center at 7 p.m.
