Box Score SCRANTON, PA (March 5, 2023) -- The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team was outscored 7-2 in the third quarter as SUNY Cortland went on to defeat the Royals 21-14 in non-conference action at Weiss Field on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, the Royals move to 2-2 on the season as they continue through their tough non-conference schedule.
Scranton opened up the game strong, holding a 5-3 lead at the end of the first period including a pair of goals from freshman Kyle Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan).
Cortland tied the game up at 6-6 at the 11:53 mark of the second quarter, but senior Mitchell Kozak (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park Memorial) found an answer for Scranton as he scored off an assist from fellow senior Matt Solleder (Ramsey, N.J. / Don Bosco Prep) to put Scranton up one with 9:44 remaining in the first half.
Following Kozak's goal, the Dragons went on a 5-0 run and led Scranton 11-7 with just over six minutes remaining in the half. A pair of late goals from Kozak and junior Seamus O'Callaghan (Bethpage, N.Y. / Chaminade) brought Scranton within two at halftime.
Cortland came out firiing to start the second half as they outscored the Royals 7-2 in the quarter and held an 18-11 lead headed into the final period.
Solleder scored back-to-back goals to start the fourth quarter, but Cortland responded with two goals of their own. The Dragons went on to win by a score of 21-14.
Junior Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) led Scranton with four goals on the day. Sophomore Zachariah Palinkas (Emmaus, Pa. / Emmaus) had a solid day defensively, recording four caused turnovers for Scranton.
The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday when they head to Muhlenberg at 7:00 PM.
