Crapanzano Breaks Single-Season Goals Record as Men's Lacrosse Tops Catholic in 10-8 Thriller

Box Score

WASHINGTON, DC (April 22, 2023) -- Senior Christopher Crapanzano (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) broke The University of Scranton men's lacrosse program's single-season goals record as he recorded his 46th goal of the year in a thrilling 10-8 win at Catholic on Saturday afternoon.

The previous record of 45 goals was set by Connor Kirkwood in 2018.

With the win, head coach Michael Hofmeister's team advances to 11-5 on the season and 5-1 in Landmark Conference play.

Catholic scored the opening goal of the game at the 9:14 mark but freshman Kyle Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J. / Bridgewater-Raritan) responded for Scranton and tied the game up at 1-1 less than three minutes later. Both sides exchanged goals in the late stages of the opening period as the game remained locked up at 2-2 headed into the second.

Senior Matt Solleder (Ramsey, N.J. / Don Bosco Prep) got things rolling for Scranton to start the second quarter as he scored off an assist from junior Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset). The Cardinals then took a 4-3 lead after back-to-back goals at the 10 minute mark. The Royals answered with a pair of goals from the likes of Crapanzano and junior Joe Boyle (Huntington, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) to take a 5-4 lead with 5:27 remaining in the first half. Catholic scored a late goal to tie the game up at 5-5 headed into the break.

Crapanzano broke the deadlock to start the second half as he found the back of the net on a man-up sequence for the Royals. The Cardinals regained the lead at the 6:08 mark as they scored a pair of goals and held a 7-6 advantage with just over six minutes remaining in the third quarter. Senior Mitchell Kozak (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park Memorial) found a late third quarter goal off an assist from Crapanzano to tie up the game at 7-7 with one period left to play.

Junior Alex Eglitis (Randolph, N.J. / Randolph) scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter followed by another Scranton goal from freshman Jason Kozak (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park Memorial) as the Royals took a 9-7 lead with 7:40 remaining in regulation. Catholic cut Scranton's lead to just one with 4:14 left but a late goal from Crapanzano and a couple key saves late in the game from freshman goalkeeper Declan Allen (Garden City, N.Y. / Millbrook) sealed it as the Royals went on to win 10-8.

Crapanzano led the way for Scranton with four points on three goals and one assist while McAree and Solleder each posted three-point performances. Allen earned his ninth win of the season in goal for the Royals while making 11 saves on the day.

Senior Colin Pierce (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) had a strong game defensively, recording three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Crapanzano filled up the stat sheet as he also won 9-11 face-offs in the win.

The men's lacrosse team returns to action next Saturday for its final regular season contest of the season at Susquehanna at 1:00 PM.
