Box Score SCRANTON, PA (April 22, 2023) -- The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team battled hard but a strong fourth period from Catholic proved the difference as the Royals were defeated 11-9 on Saturday afternoon at Weiss Field.
With the loss, the Royals move to 7-8 on the season and 4-2 in Landmark Conference play.
Sophomore Grace Lane (Long Beach, N.Y. / Sacred Heart Academy) got off to a hot start, scoring Scranton's first two goals of the game. Junior Lauren Crotty (Long Beach, N.Y. / Kellenberg Memorial) added a first period goal and the Royals led 3-2 headed into the second period.
Lane continued to lead the charge for Scranton in the second quarter as she added two more goals to her tally along with an assist. Juniors Erin Reich (Rockville Centre, N.Y. / South Side) and Devyn Tanajewski (Ringwood, N.J. / Lakeland Regional) each found the back of the net for the Royals in the second period as Scranton held a 7-6 lead at the end of the first half.
The Cardinals tied the game up at 7-7 early in the third period but a late free-position goal from Lane gave Scranton a one goal advantage headed into the final quarter.
Catholic went on to outscore the Royals 4-1 in the fourth period and win by a final score of 11-9.
Lane finished with a game-high six points on five goals and one assist while sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Boldis (Merrick, N.Y. / Sanford H. Calhoun) posted 10 saves. Junior Nicolina Mauro (South Hempstead, N.Y. / South Side) had a strong game defensively, recording a game-high five caused turnovers and adding a pair of ground balls.
The women's lacrosse team returns to action on Tuesday for a 6:30 PM game at Cabrini.
