Box Score BETHLEHEM, PA (April 8, 2023) -- The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team had eight different goal scorers and dominated the second half in an 18-8 win over Moravian in Landmark Conference action on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Royals advance to 8-5 on the season and 2-1 in conference play.
The Greyhounds opened up the scoring on the day with a goal in the first two minutes of action. Scranton answered quickly with three straight goals in the following five minutes to take a 3-1 lead with 8:02 remaining in the first period. The remainder of the first quarter was scoreless between the two sides as the Royals took a 3-1 lead headed into the second period.
Sophomore Colin Hughes (Massapequa, N.Y., Chaminade) and senior Christopher Crapanzano (Basking Ridge, N.J. / Ridge) added to the tally for Scranton in the second quarter but the Greyhounds matched the Royals with two goals of their own. Scranton held a 7-5 lead headed into halftime.
Junior Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) got the Royals going to start the second half as he scored back-to-back goals to give Scranton a four goal cushion. Moravian responded with two goals of its own to cut Scranton's lead back to two with just over nine minutes remaining in the third quarter. The Royals dominated the final nine minutes of action in the third period as they outscored the Greyhounds 5-1 and held a 12-6 lead with one quarter to play.
Scranton continued its strong play in the fourth period, outscoring Moravian 6-2 to earn a commanding 18-8 win over the Greyhounds.
Four Royals posted hattricks on the day, including Crapanzano, McAree, and seniors Mitchell Kozak (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park Memorial) and Nick Donato (Langhorne, Pa. / Neshaminy). Kozak also led the Royals with four assists for a game-high seven points. Senior Matt Solleder (Ramsey, N.J. / Don Bosco Prep) and junior Joe Boyle (Huntington, N.Y. / St. Anthony's) each added three-point performances for Scranton.
Senior Colin Pierce (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) had a strong game defensively as he recorded seven ground balls and added two caused turnovers. Freshman goalkeeper Declan Allen (Garden City, N.Y. / Millbrook) made 12 saves and picked up his sixth win of the season.
The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday at Weiss Field in a Landmark Conference matchup against Drew at 7:00 p.m.
