Following a record-setting eight conference championships, The University of Scranton captured the 2022-23 Landmark Presidents' Trophy for the second time in history as announced by the conference office on Thursday afternoon.
Scranton previously won the trophy during the 2019-20 campaign and has now registered a top-three finish in each of the last four years.
The Royals finished on top of the standings with 9.61 points, while Catholic finished second at 9.16 and Susquehanna took third at 7.70.
"The 2022-23 academic year for Scranton athletics will go down as the most successful year in school history! Capturing the Landmark Presidents' Trophy is the icing on the cake!" Executive Director of Athletics Dave Martin said. "I am incredibly proud of the culture we have built in the athletics department. This award is a result of a tremendous amount of hard work, commitment, and dedication from our student-athletes as well as our coaches. We would also like to thank our parents, alumni and friends of our program who all had a hand in making this season such a success!"Â
This spring, Scranton clinched the Presidents' Trophy with conference titles in men's golf and men's and women's lacrosse.
The 2022-23 season also featured Landmark titles in women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and men's and women's basketball.
Each team also competed in postseason play over the course of the year for the first time in Scranton Athletics history. To go along with the staggering eight championships, the Royals posted runner-up finishes in baseball, women's indoor track & field, women's swimming & diving and volleyball.
The Landmark Presidents' Trophy is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for regular season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition. The point structure was revised in the summer of 2016 with different point hierarchies for team and individual sports, but the maximum number of points any team can earn is 15. The total number of points each institution earn is divided by the number of Landmark sports sponsored to determine the average.
Moravian finished fourth with 6.57 points and rounding out the remainder of the standings were Drew (5.88), Elizabethtown (5.16), Goucher (3.15) and Juniata (2.62).
