Seven members of The University of Scranton men's and women's track & field programs earned College Sports Communicators' Academic All-District honors as announced by the organization this week.
Senior
Kevin Duffy (Springfield, N.J./Seton Hall Prep), graduate student
Luke Shannon (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) and sophomore
Christian Snee (Olyphant, Pa./Mid Valley) received the honor from the men's track & field team, while graduate student
Jessica Hoffmann (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills), sophomore
Samantha Hoffmann (Millington, N.J./Watchung Hills), junior
Chelsea Long (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and senior
Meghan Winter (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) of the women's program earned the award.
Academic All-District recognizes student-athletes for their performance both in their sport and in the classroom as honorees must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher and be a key starter/reserve for their respective team.
All seven will now automatically be considered for the Academic All-America ballot that will be released on June 28 (women) and June 29 (men).
Duffy competed in 21 meets for the Royals over the last two seasons and holds the outdoor program record in the high jump at 1.66m, while also sharing the outdoor record at 1.74m. In those 21 meets, the Springfield, N.J., native also recorded 13 Top-10 finishes. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Scranton in May and held an impressive 3.98 GPA as an Accounting major.
For Shannon, the Rockville Centre, N.Y., native holds the indoor program record in the 400 meters at 52.38 seconds and is also a member of record-holding relay teams in the Distance Medley Relay (Indoor), 4x400 and 4x800 (Outdoor). Shannon received his Master's Degree of Business Administration in Business Analytics from Scranton in May and held a 3.73 GPA.
Snee is also a member of the outdoor record-holding 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams and recorded 10 top-10 finishes this season for the Royals including a third-place finish in the 800 meters at the 2023 Landmark Indoor Championships. In the classroom, he holds a 3.68 GPA as a Kinesiology major.
For the women's team,
Jessica Hoffmann holds a total of seven program records with three indoor events (Mile, 3,000, 5,000) and four outdoor (1,500, 3,000, 5,000 & 10,000 meters). The Millington, N.J., native is the only two-time NCAA qualifier in women's cross country program history and also qualified in indoor track & field this past winter in the 5,000 meters. She is currently enrolled in The University's Doctorate of Physical Therapy program and has a 3.71 GPA.
Jessica's younger sister,
Samantha Hoffmann holds both the indoor (2:22.16) and outdoor (2:20.41) program records in the 800 meters and won the Landmark title in the mile at the Indoor Championships in February. Over her first two seasons in the program, she has registered 18 top-five finishes and also boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA as a Nursing major.
Long is the indoor program record holder in both the 500 (1:27.28) and the 1,000 meters (3:28.62) and has recorded 12 career Top-10 finishes during her first three seasons. In the classroom, she holds a 3.73 GPA as a Kinesiology major and is a two-time member of the Landmark Academic Honor Roll.
Winter finished her career as the program's outdoor program record holder in the triple jump at 10.46m and competed in 31 meets for the Royals, posting 29 career Top-10 finishes. In May, Winter earned her Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Scranton with a 3.61 GPA.
