SCRANTON, Pa. – The University of Scranton volleyball team (3-5) rallied from an early first set deficit and then cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Haverford College Fords (3-6) on Saturday afternoon at the John Long Center in Scranton.
Scranton 3, Haverford 0 (29-27, 25-21, 25-16)
Haverford raced out to an early 10-2 lead in the first set, but a kill by senior Stephanie Margolies (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) ignited a six-point run that brought the Royals within a pair at 10-8. The two teams then traded points for much of the remainder of the set and Scranton led 22-20 before three straight Haverford points gave the visitors a 23-22 edge. Haverford had a chance to clinch the set with a 27-26 lead before an attack error and consecutive service aces by sophomore Maddie Forry (Reading, Pa./Exeter Township) sealed a 29-27 victory for the Royals.
Fellow sophomore Camryn Hoffman (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) delivered a service ace of her own in the second set for a 10-5 advantage and the Royals later held a 15-12 lead before six straight Fords points made it 18-15 in favor of the visitors. However, head coach Jamie Spangler's team was once again able to battle back late and erased a 21-17 deficit by taking the final eight points that included two more service aces for Hoffman along with a pair of kills apiece by sophomores Erin Gretsky (Middletown, N.J./Saint John Vianney) and Deanna Whelpley (Congers, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy).
In the third set, Scranton held a 10-5 lead before breaking things open with six straight points and a kill by junior Erin Keaveney (Collegeville, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) made it a 16-5 game. The Fords fought back within seven on a couple of different occasions, but were unable to get any closer and a block assist by Keaveney and sophomore Gwen Koester (Merrick, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) closed out the 25-16 victory.
Margolies led all players with 13 kills, while Keaveney added 11 and Whelpley had eight. Keaveney also hit an impressive .400 in the match.
Freshman Cammi Quirk (Oakland, N.J./Ridgewood) orchestrated the attack with 26 assists and Forry added nine assists, five service aces and 13 digs.
Taylor Jones and Claire Jordan recorded 10 kills apiece to pace the Fords.
The Royals hit the road to battle Johns Hopkins on Friday night in Baltimore with first serve slated for 6:30 p.m.
