Box Score Baltimore, MD -- The University of Scranton volleyball team (3-6) dropped a 3-0 decision to Mount Union (10-2) on Friday night at host Johns Hopkins.
Mount Union 3, Scranton 0 (25-16), (25-22), (25-21)
After falling down 3-0 early in the first set the Royals bounced back with consecutive kills from juniors
Erin Keaveney (Collegeville, Pa. / Villa Maria Academy) and
Sophia Hadjiyane (Huntington, N.Y. / John Glenn) to cut Mount Union's lead to just one. The Raiders scored five straight points midway through the opening set to take a 15-6 lead over the Royals. Scranton cut the lead to seven following a pair of kills from Keaveney, but it was too late as Mount Union went on to win the first set by a score of 25-16.
The Royals jumped out to an early lead in the second set as senior
Stephanie Margolies (Westfield, N.J. Westfield) provided three consecutive service aces. The Raiders fought back and tied it up at 7-7 midway through the second set. With the game tied at 10-10, Mount Union scored six points unanswered to take a 16-10 lead. Scranton cut the led to 21-18 after a kill from freshman
Cammi Quirk (Oakland, N.J. / Ridgewood). The Royals came up just short in the second set as Mount Union went on to win 25-22.
Scranton took a 3-1 lead to open up the third set as sophomore
Deanna Whelpley (Congers, N.Y. / Immaculate Heart Academy), Margolies and Hadjiyane all recorded kills. After trailing 10-9, Scranton scored five straight points midway through the third set to take a 14-10 lead over the Raiders. Mount Union responded with four consecutive points of their own to tie the game up at 14-14. With the game tied at 17-17 the Raiders took 7 points in a row to take a 23-17 lead and eventually win the third set by a score of 25-21.Â
Whelpley led the Royals with a game-high 15 kills, while junior
Gianna Detorie (Rumford, R.I. / Bishop Feehan) added 19 assists. Defensively, sophomore
Maddie Forry (Reading, Pa. / Exeter Township) recorded a game-high 20 digs.
Scranton returns to action tomorrow at 3:00 PM & 5:30 PM for games against Salisbury and Johns Hopkins.
