WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sophomore Annie Shaw (Exton, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored the lone goal of the game in the 43rd minute and The University of Scranton field hockey team (8-2, 3-0 Landmark) notched a 1-0 victory over the Catholic University Cardinals (5-4, 2-1 Landmark) on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium in Washington, D.C.

Shaw collected the ball in the circle after it deflected off the post and was able to bury her third goal of the season for a 1-0 lead.

Scranton now sits atop the Landmark Conference standings along with Susquehanna as both teams are 3-0 in league play.

Both teams held strong defensively through the entirety of the first two quarters as neither team was able to record a shot and combined for just one penalty corner as things were scoreless at halftime.

Following a Royals' penalty corner in the 34th minute. Catholic goalie Abigail Kearney made a trio of saves on shots by Shaw and seniors Bridget Abraldes (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and Katie Redding (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) to keep things scoreless for the time being. Throughout the remainder of the third quarter, Scranton continued to threaten offensively including a pair of shots from Redding of which one hit the post and the other was cleared off the goal line on a defensive save. After her shot hit the post, Shaw was able to pounce on the rebound and gave the Royals the 1-0 edge.

The Royals' defense held Catholic to just two shots on the day and the visitors held a commanding 11-2 shot advantage led by six from Redding. Junior goalie Gianna Travia (Havertown, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) notched her second shutout of the season.

Head coach Colleen Moyer now has 199 victories in her career and the Royals are set to hit the road to battle Misericordia on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
