Women's Soccer Defeats Lycoming, 4-2

SCRANTON, PA -- The University of Scranton women's soccer team took down Lycoming College 4-2 in Landmark Conference action at Weiss Field on Wednesday night.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Scranton 4, Lycoming 2
  • Records: Scranton (9-1-2, 3-0-0 LC), Lycoming (9-2-2, 1-1-1 LC)
How it Happened
  • The Royals scored the opening goal of the game in the 18th minute as graduate student Mary Haggerty served a corner into the box that found the head of classmate Niamh Healy who buried it into the back of the net. 
  • Lycoming leveled the game at 1-1 in the 38th minute as Julia Bidelspach scored a header off a free kick from Haley Schafer.
  • Less than 20 seconds later, Scranton regained the lead as freshman Molly Martys found senior Samantha Goffice on a perfect through ball and Goffice ripped a shot past the keeper to make it 2-1. 
  • The Warriors tied the game up at 2-2 in the 40th minute on a corner kick that led to an own goal from Scranton. 
  • Junior Morgan Griffin scored the go-ahead goal for the Royals in the 84th minute as she curled a shot with her left foot from the top of the box into the bottom right corner of the net. 
  • In the 87th minute, senior Emily Bannon hit a shot that deflected off the hands of Lycoming's goalkeeper and off the crossbar before landing in the path of Martys who finished the rebound to make it 4-2 in favor of Scranton. 
Top Performers
  • Healy scored her eighth goal of the season which ranks tied for first in the conference.
  • Goffice and Griffin each recorded their first goal of the year.
  • Martys notched her second goal of the season and third assist.
  • Senior goalkeeper Nicole Olson made five saves in net for Scranton.
Inside the Box Score
  • Scranton held a 30-6 advantage in shots and an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
