Box Score Scranton, Pa -- In its season opener on Saturday afternoon, The University of Scranton men's lacrosse team held No. 1 Salisbury to its lowest goal total of the season in a 12-5 loss at Weiss Field.
Five different Royals got on the score sheet while sophomore goalkeeper
Declan Allen ( Garden City, N.Y., Millbrook) made a game-high 15 saves for Scranton.
The Sea Gulls got on the board first at the 12:47 mark to take an early 1-0 lead. The Royals found an answer with 9:08 remaining in the first period as senior Joe Boyle ( Huntington, N.Y. St. Anthony's) found the back of the net off an assist from fellow senior Alex Eglitis (Randolph, N.J. Randolph). The two teams remained locked up at 1-1 headed into the second quarter.
Scranton took its first lead of the game at the 12:03 mark in the second period as senior Matthew McAree (Manhasset, N.Y. Manhasset) scored off an assist from Eglitis. The Sea Gulls scored less than a minute later to level it up at 2-2.Â
Salisbury scored back-to-back goals in the middle stages of the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead over the Royals. Scranton sophomore Pat McCormack (Livingston, N.J. Livingston) brought the Royals within 1 at the 6:35 mark as he scored off an assist from fellow sophomore Jason Kozak (Floral Park, N.Y. Floral Park Memorial). The Royals trailed the top ranked Sea Gulls 4-3 headed into halftime.Â
Salisbury opened up the third period with three consecutive goals to take a 7-3 lead over Scranton. Sophomore Kyle Holmes (Bridgewater, N.J. Bridgewater-Raritan) scored the first goal of the second half for the Royals at the 9:45 mark of the third quarter.
Following two more goals for the Sea Gulls, sophomore Quinn Carson (Ardmore, Pa. Haverford) scored his first career goal for Scranton off an assist from Kozak. Salisbury held a 9-5 advantage with one period remaining.Â
The Sea Gulls scored an early goal to start the fourth period and take a 10-5 lead. Salisbury tacked on two more goals to close out the final quarter and secure a 12-5 victory over Scranton.
The men's lacrosse team returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when they take on Muhlenberg at 4:00 PM at Weiss Field.
