Box Score 2 SCRANTON, Pa. – Senior John Zarnowski (East Brunswick, N.J./St. Joseph's) reached both the 100 career hits and 100 career RBI milestones as The University of Scranton baseball team (25-9, 14-7 Landmark) swept a doubleheader from the Moravian Greyhounds (15-22, 8-15 Landmark) on Saturday at Volpe Field in Scranton.
The Royals took game one by a score of 8-5 and then notched a 12-3 victory in the nightcap.
Scranton 8, Moravian 5
Scranton took the lead for good with a three-run fifth inning and held on for an 8-5 victory in game one.
Trailing 5-3 in the fifth, Zarnowski's RBI single brought the Royals within a run and junior Jake Elston (New Milford, Conn./Canterbury School) gave the hosts the lead with a two-run single.
A pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning extended the lead to 8-5 and Moravian was able to load the bases with two outs in the ninth, but senior lefty Jason Carpenter (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) got Nick Henry swinging at strike three to end the game.
The Greyhounds got on the board early with two in the top of the first, but the Royals quickly responded with Zarnowski's three-run blast in the bottom half to take a 3-2 lead for the time being.
His three-run homer put Zarnowski over the 100 RBI mark for his career, becoming the 11th player in program history to accomplish the feat.
Henry's two-run single in the third regained the lead for the Greyhounds and a run in the fifth made it 5-3 before the afore-mentioned Scranton rally.
Graduate student righty Hunter Ralston (Duryea, Pa./Pittston Area) recorded the win for the Royals as he allowed five runs on 10 hits to go along with a walk and seven strikeouts over 6 1/3 IP.
Ross Huffman took the loss for Moravian after giving up six runs on eight hits while walking two and fanning three in five innings of work.
Zarnowski added an RBI double in the seventh and later scored on senior Jack Heineman's (Abington, Pa./LaSalle College sac fly to make it an 8-5 game.
Senior lefty Matt Roda (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) was strong in relief as he allowed just one hit and struck out three in 2 1/3 IP before giving way to Carpenter for the final out of the game.
Sophomore Vincent Napolitano (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had three hits and two runs scored in the contest, while Zarnowski added three hits, five RBI and three runs scored. Elston (2-4, 2 RBI) also tallied a multi-hit game for the Royals.
Scranton 12, Moravian 3
Graduate student righty Daniel Johnson (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Immaculata) fired seven strong innings and Zarnowski matched his career-high with four hits as the Royals rolled to the 12-3 victory in game two.
A three-run first set the tone for Scranton offensively as Zarnowski delivered an RBI single and Heineman plated a pair with a two-run double. Freshman Jake Lopez (Oakland, N.J./Ramapo) added a sac fly in the second inning and a hit by pitch and walk with the bases loaded in the third extended the lead to 6-0.
Johnson earned his team-leading sixth win of the season as he allowed three runs on four hits while fanning three in 7.0 IP.
Aaron Flyte took the loss for Moravian as he was tagged with six runs on nine hits to go along with a walk and a strikeout in two plus innings.
Moravian cut the lead in half with three in the sixth inning, but the Royals once again answered in the home half of the frame as Zarnowski came through with an RBI single and a balk brought home a second run to make it 8-3.
Four more runs in the seventh extended the lead to 12-3 as Napolitano knocked in two with a two-run double, Zarnowski had an RBI single and freshman Jared Cassella (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) plated Zarnowski with an RBI fielder's choice.
Zarnowski (4-4, 3 RBI, SB, 4 R) led the way offensively and sophomore Aidan Casey (Silver Beach, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) had three hits, while Heineman (2-3, 2B, 2 RBI, R) and Napolitano (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI, SB, 3 R) added two hits apiece.
Senior lefty Mike Fox (Westfield, N.J./Union Catholic) struck out three over two scoreless innings of relief for the Royals.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon at Volpe Field with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
