Sophomore Alyssa Bean led The University of Scranton women's swimming team to a dominant season-opening victory over Widener on Saturday, earning her selection as the Landmark Conference Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week.
Bean turned in a standout performance at the Byron Recreation Complex, winning three individual events and contributing to a relay victory as the Royals rolled to a 181–81 triumph. She captured first place in the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.79), 100-yard backstroke (1:03.09), and 50-yard butterfly (28.15), sweeping her individual events.
The sophomore also helped Scranton open the meet with a win in the 200-yard medley relay, teaming with Kimberly Gingrass, Sami Roerig, and Amelia Griffin for a time of 1:54.94.
Bean's dominant showing set the tone for a Royals squad that claimed first place in nearly every event of the meet and swept several races.
Scranton (1–0) returns to action next weekend when it travels to Ithaca, N.Y., for a tri-meet against Ithaca College and Hartwick College on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m.
