Women's Lacrosse Suffers Heartbreaking Loss to No. 20 Stevens on Saturday, 12-11

HOBOKEN, N.J. - The University of Scranton women's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker to No. 20 Stevens Institute of Technology, 12-11, Saturday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J.

The Basics

How it Happened

  • Stevens got off to a red-hot start, winning each of the first four draws and scoring four times in the first six minutes of the game to take an early 4-0 advantage.
  • Junior goalkeeper Eva Guerino made a total of six saves in the first quarter, including four saves after the Ducks' fourth goal to keep the game in reach for Scranton.
  • After Stevens scored their fifth goal of the game 4:27 into the second quarter, the Royals went on a run of four straight goals to end the first half.
  • Graduate student Erin Reich started the scoring for Scranton, ripping one past Stevens' goalie Emma Guzowski to get Scranton on the board. Just over two minutes later, Reich connected with sophomore Jillian Lopez who found the back of the net to bring the Royals within three goals.
  • Senior Grace Lane then scored a pair of unassisted goals just 57 seconds apart to cut the Ducks' lead to 5-4. Lane added her third of the game at the 3:18 mark in a player up opportunity to tie the game at five apiece.
  • Stevens did get one goal back, however, taking a 6-5 lead into halftime.
  • The Ducks opened the scoring in the second half and extended their lead to two goals, but graduate student Devyn Tanajewski responded less than two minutes later to cut the Stevens' lead back to one goal at 7-6.
  • After Stevens scored their eighth goal of the game 29 seconds after the Tanajewski score, senior Molly McCarren brought the Royals back within one with her first goal of the day in a player up opportunity at the 6:31 mark.
  • The Royals tied the game with 1:32 left to play in the third quarter, as Tanajewski capitalized on a free position shot to even the score at 8-8.
  • Scranton took their first lead of the day at the 12:45 mark of the fourth quarter as sophomore Eileen Hewitt made a quick pass in traffic to Lopez who quickly turned and drilled the shot to put the Royals ahead 9-8. 
  • That lead didn't last long as Stevens capitalized on a player up scenario and tied it up at nine apiece with 11:51 left in the game. The Ducks then took the 10-9 lead at the 8:36 mark.
  • Scranton answered right back again, this time senior Catherine McGlynn handled a high pass from Hewitt and drained the shot to tie the game at 10-10. 
  • In what was a back and forth second half, the Ducks retook the lead again, scoring their 11th goal with just one second left on the shot clock and with 4:55 left in the game. Stevens scored the insurance goal that wound up being the difference in the game to go up 12-10 with 2:42 to go in the game.
  • Lane got the Royals within one goal with 57 seconds to go in the contest with her fourth goal of the game, but Stevens won the final draw control of the game and drained the rest of the time on the clock to win the game 12-11.
