Scranton Baseball Defeats Muhlenberg College, 7-3

SCRANTON, PA -- The University of Scranton baseball team defeated Muhlenberg College, 7-3, Friday evening at Volpe Field in Scranton.  

The Basics 

  • Final Score: Scranton – 7, Muhlenberg – 3 
  • Records: Scranton (4-2), Muhlenberg (1-3)
  • WinMason Fischer (1-0), Loss: Luke Foley (1-1) 

How it Happened 

  • The Royals struck first in the bottom of the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. After Matthew Gannon was hit by a pitch and Vincent Napolitano moved him to third with a single, Gannon scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run. 
  • Muhlenberg opened the top of the third inning with a pair of singles to put two runners on base, and Thomas Pranzo moved both into scoring position. Two batters later, Spencer Hobson brought home both runners with a single to left field. 
  • With one out in the bottom of the third, Aidan Casey and Jared Cassella both singled, and Conor Campbell drew a walk to load the bases for John Heitzman, who drove in Casey on a ground out to tie the game at 2-2. 
  • Freshman Krish Patel pitched well in his first career start, throwing four innings with one strikeout and allowing two earned runs to provide Scranton with a strong start. 
  • The Mules led off the top of the sixth with a double, but Mason Fischer worked out of trouble by retiring the next three batters in order to end the inning and strand the go-ahead runner at second base. 
  • Heitzman led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple, and one pitch later, Gannon drove him in with a sacrifice fly to put Scranton back in front, 3-2. 
  • Muhlenberg tied the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI groundout, but the Royals answered in the bottom of the inning when Campbell drove in Casey with a sacrifice fly to give Scranton a 4-3 lead. 
  • Vince Cannizzaro pitched a scoreless inning in the top of the eighth, recording a strikeout in his first career appearance, and the Royals added three insurance runs in the bottom of the inning. Scranton loaded the bases and scored one run on a hit by pitch, while two more came home on an error to extend the lead to 7-3. 
  • Logan Mason came on to pitch the ninth inning for Scranton, tossing a scoreless frame to lock up the 7-3 win for the Royals.
