The University of Scranton softball team was swept by Lebanon Valley College on Tuesday afternoon at Magis Field, falling 9-5 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap.

The Basics

  • Game 1 Final Score: Lebanon Valley – 9, Scranton – 5
  • Game 2 Final Score (F/8): Lebanon Valley – 3, Scranton– 2
  • Records: Scranton (16-17); Lebanon Valley (21-15)
Game One
  • Win: Miley Beachel (8-4); Loss: Carly Noble (3-3)
How it Happened
  • Lebanon Valley scored three times in the first inning to grab the early advantage. A double and a walk put the first two runners on base for the Dutchmen, and a double steal moved them into scoring position for Maddy Gronback, who ripped a two run double. Three batters later, an RBI single extended the lead to 3-0.
  • Scranton broke through in the bottom of the third, trimming the deficit to one. With runners on first and second and two outs, Mollie Ferreira delivered a two-run double to make it 3-2.
  • The Dutchmen added a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and plated three more in the sixth on a pair of doubles to stretch the lead to 7-2.
  • Celia Totaro singled home Emily Riehl to cut the margin to 7-3, and one batter later, Molly Ferreira crushed a two-run home run to pull Scranton within two.
  • Lebanon Valley answered in the top of the seventh, scoring once on a fielder's choice and again on an RBI single to push the lead to 9-5.
  • Scranton got the tying run on deck in the bottom of the seventh, but the Dutchmen worked out of trouble by inducing a double play and a fly out to secure the 9-5 win over the Royals.
Game Two  How it Happened
  • Scranton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Celia Totaro scored on a Gianna Muliero groundout.
  • Muliero drove in Totaro again in the bottom of the third with another RBI groundout to extend Scranton's lead to 2-0.
  • Lebanon Valley pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the fourth with an RBI groundout and an RBI double to tie the score at 2-2.
  • Neither team was able to score for the remainder of regulation as both pitching staffs stood tall. Emma Douglass fired seven strong innings with seven strikeouts as the game moved into extra innings.
  • As the free runner in the top of the eighth, Chrissy Ivers advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Holly Grube then followed with a flyout to center and although Celia Totaro fired a one hop strike to the plate, the Royals were called for interference at home, allowing the Dutchmen to take a 3-2 lead.
  • Scranton also bunted its free runner over, putting the tying run at third with two outs, but the Royals stranded the runner there and fell, 3-2.
Up Next:
  • The Royals are back on action Saturday with their final Landmark Conference series of the season against Susquehanna University, with game one set to begin at 1 PM in Selinsgrove.
