University of Scranton junior defender James Mayo has been named the Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Mayo anchored a Royals defense that delivered back-to-back shutout wins to open the season. Scranton opened with a 1-0 win over No. 16 Messiah, holding the Falcons to just five total shots and one shot on goal. The Royals followed that up on Saturday with a 3-0 win at Muhlenberg, where Mayo scored the game's opening goal on a header off a long throw-in.
The weekly honor is the first of the season for Mayo and the Royals' back line, which has yet to allow a goal through two matches.
Scranton is back in action Wednesday night, traveling to Kean University for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
