SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton ended the fall
portion of its 2010-2011 schedule on a positive note Thursday
afternoon at the Poly Hi Tennis Courts.
Behind two wins apiece from seniors Kelly
Costello (Branchville, N.J./High Point Regional),
junior Caitlin
Ehly (Philadelphia, Pa./Saint Basil Academy),
sophomores Lindsay
Ward (Bensalem, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Puneet
Dhillon (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central), and
first-year player Devon
Cohen (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), the Royals
blanked the Defenders, 9-0.
With the win, the Royals improved to 2-2 while Baptist Bible
fell to 5-6.
Cohen improved her team-leading record in singles to 3-1 with a
6-1, 6-1 victory over Kellie Bernard (Swayzee, Ind.) at number
two. Costello and Ehly evened their records at 2-2 by downing
Julie Herr (Lancaster, Pa./Solanco), 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-4) and Sarah
Salzmann (Dunbarton, N.H./Trinity Christian), 6-1, 6-4, at three
and four, respectively, while Ward and Dhillon picked up their
first victories of the season. Ward downed Cassy Labaw, 6-0,
6-1, at five and Dhillon stopped Rebecca Wagner (Durant,
Iowa/Durant) at six, 6-1, 6-1. Also posting her first win of
the season today for the Royals was junior Elisha
Connell (Orangeburg, N.Y./Albertus Magnus), who turned
back Katie Boger (Newton, N.J./Newton), 6-4, 6-3, at one.
