The University of Scranton women's basketball team found
its shooting touch in the second half and three players finished in
double figures as the Lady Royals rallied to defeat King's
College, 64-59, on Tuesday evening in the John Long Center.
Sophomore forward Meredith Mesaris (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax)
finished with 20 points and six rebounds, senior forward Erin Boggan (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) had 18
points and 11 rebounds and junior guard Alison Sweeney (Wall, N.J./St. Rose) added 12
points and six rebounds as Scranton improved to 3-0.
The Lady Royals trailed at halftime, 29-25, after shooting just
35.5 percent (11-for-31) and turning the ball over 14 times. A
decided edge on the glass and 15 combined points from Boggan and
Sweeney helped Scranton stay within striking distance at the
break.
King's (2-1) maintained their lead for the first six
minutes of the second half before Scranton went on a 17-4 run over
a span of 6:27 to take a 53-41 lead with 7:37 to play. Boggan
scored six points and Boggan had four during the run, and sophomore
guard Lia
DiSciascio (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara)
capped the run with a 3-pointer.
The Lady Monarchs answered with a 12-1 run to cut their deficit
to 54-53 with 3:51 to play. But Mesaris and senior guard Katherine Torto (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic
Central) hit 3-pointers as the Lady Royals held on in the
final minutes.
Scranton shot 16-for-31 (51.6 percent) from the floor in the
second half, including 12-for-17 inside the 3-point arc.
Conversely, King's shot just 11-for-32 (34.4 percent) after
the break, including 3-for-11 from 3-point range. For the game,
Scranton shot 43.5 percent (27-for-62) while King's shot 36.4
percent (24-for-66).
Scranton dominated the rebounding battle, 51-28, as five Lady
Royals had at least six rebounds. That advantage on the boards
helped offset 25 turnovers to just 10 for King's.
Torto finished with seven points and eight rebounds for
Scranton, and sophomore guard Lindsay Fluehr (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth
Academy) had seven rebounds and six assists.
Boggan and Mesaris have now been in double figures in scoring in
each of Scranton's three games. Boggan is averaging a
double-double of 17.7 points and 10.0 rebounds while Mesaris is
averaging 17.0 points while hitting six of 12 3-pointers.
Scranton is now 59-13 all-time against King's. The Lady
Royals are off to their first 3-0 start since the 2009-10 season
when they won five straight to open the schedule.
The Lady Monarchs were led by senior guard Katlin Michaels
(Berwick, Pa./Berwick), who had 18 points, seven assists and six
rebounds. Sophomore forward Marissa Manning (Newtown Square,
Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) had 14 points and senior guard Celia
Rader (Scranton, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) added 12.
Scranton will return to action on Monday, Nov. 26, when they
travel across town to face Marywood University at 7 p.m. at
Insalaco Arena. The Lady Royals return home a night later to host
Cabrini at 5 p.m. in the Long Center.
