WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, Pa.—The University of Scranton
softball team belted out plenty of hits in today’s
non-conference doubleheader against King’s College at Betzler
Field.
Scoring runs, however, turned out to be a different story for the
Royals.
Scranton out-hit the Monarchs, 9-3, but stranded 12 runners on
base en route to a 3-1 loss in the opener. In the nightcap,
the Royals failed to convert on a couple of early scoring
opportunities and suffered an 8-0 setback in five innings.
The loss drops Scranton to 2-4 while the Monarchs improve to
8-2.
Senior Kristen Williams (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury)
and sophomore Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley
View) each belted a double among their two hits apiece and
losing pitcher Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock)
and fellow freshman Maria Gentile (Jefferson Township, Pa./North
Pocono) smacked two hits for the Royals in the first
game.
Junior Amanda Cardone (Nanticoke, Pa./Nanticoke), senior Kayla
Rutkoski (Shickshinny, Pa./Northwest Area), and freshman Katie
Kowalski (Nanticoke, Pa./Nanticoke) each singled for
King’s.
The Royals left six runners on base in the first three innings
before the Monarchs broke it open with a four-run rally in the
fourth and three more in the fifth in the nightcap.
Junior Jenn Harnischfeger (Wilkes-Barre, Pa./Nanticoke) tripled
twice and drove in two runs and freshman Maggie Gola (Nanticoke,
Pa./Nanticoke) had two hits, including a home run, as the Monarchs
finished with 10 hits overall. Rutkoski chipped in two hits
and junior Tina Seber (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) doubled for
King’s. Gentile had Scranton’s only extra-base
hit in the second game, a double in the fourth inning.
Juniors Brittany Haight (Warren Center, Pa./Northeast Bradford)
and winning pitcher Karissa Kross (Exeter, Pa./Wyoming Area) each
struck out five batters for King’s in the second game while
senior Annie Erndl (Clarksburg, NJ/Allentown) went 6 and 1/3
innings and struck out three to pick up the victory in the first
game. Haight got the final two outs in the opener to earn a
save.
The Royals will return to action this Monday, March 25, against
Centenary College in Hackettstown, New Jersey, beginning at 3:00
p.m.
