HILTON HEAD, SC—The University of Scranton men’s tennis team swept all six singles matches en route to a 7-2 victory over Concordia University (Wisc.) this morning.
In their first match yesterday to open this Spring Break trip, the Royals suffered a 9-0 loss to Colby College (Maine).
Today, the Royals won all six singles matches in straight sets. Scranton, now 1-2, also picked up a point in doubles when the number one duo of senior Tim McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Scranton Preparatory) and junior David Teres (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon) turned back Taylor Shaffer and Skip Turner, 8-4.
McGurrin earned his first win in singles this year and the 31st of his career with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Russell Johnson in the number one spot in the lineup. Teres improved to 18-10 in his career with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Turner at two, while senior Joe Morra (Bronx, NY/Fordham Preparatory) topped Shaffer, 6-1, 6-1, at three to move to 41-23 in his career.
Scranton also picked up wins from seniors Mike Pannone (Maplewood, NJ/Seton Hall Preparatory) and Bennett Kelley (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley Central) and junior Brian Williams (Lebanon, NJ/North Hunterdon). Pannone defeated Antone Leon, 6-3, 6-0 at four, Kelley won at six, 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, and Williams stopped Tanner Hahn at five, 6-1, 6-1.
The Royals will return to action Thursday, March 28, against Oneonta State University beginning at 9:00 a.m.
