MADISON, N.J.—The University of Scranton men’s lacrosse
team ended nearly nine years of frustration against Drew University
in Landmark Conference action Thursday evening.
The Royals posted their first win over the Rangers since April 24,
2004, with a 10-7 victory. They also extended their
season-long winning streak to four games to improve to 5-3 overall
and 2-0 in the conference.
Senior midfielder Dillon McInerney (Hawthorne, NJ/Bergen
Catholic) and junior attacker Gus
Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conastoga) led Scranton with three
goals apiece and senior attacker Taylor Nelson (Chester Springs, Pa./Downingtown
East) finished with two goals and an assist. The
Royals also received a goal and two assists from junior midfielder
John
Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph’s Preparatory),
a goal from freshman midfielder Brad
Elkin (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Preparatory), and
three assists from junior midfielder Mike
Deliberti (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe).
Senior Eric Tripp (Glen Cove, NY/Glen Cove) led the Rangers, now
1-5 overall and 0-3 in the Landmark, with two goals and two
assists, junior attacker/midfielder Mike Marone (Morristown,
NJ/Delbarton) had two goals and an assist, and senior midfielder
Steve Gentile (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Indian Hills) added two
goals.
The Royals broke open a close game by scoring the first three goals
of the fourth period—one each by Sturm, McInerney, and
Elkin—to extend a 7-6 lead into a 10-6 cushion.
Scranton then held the Rangers to just one goal the rest of the
way.
Each goalkeeper—Scranton’s Ben
Worthington (Jenkintown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and
Drew’s Andrew Goldberg (Randolph, NJ/Newark
Academy)—was credited with eight saves.
Tonight’s win was Scranton’s first over Drew since an
8-6 victory on April 24, 2004, in Madison, New Jersey. Three
of the previous four games between the two teams, however, have
been decided by two-or-fewer goals.
The Royals will return to action next Wednesday, April 3, against
FDU-Florham at 7:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
