JESSUP, Pa.—The University of Scranton softball team split a
Landmark Conference doubleheader with Catholic University at the
Jessup Youth Sports Complex Saturday afternoon, dropping a 7-5
decision in the opener and before scoring a 6-5 victory in the
nightcap.
After squandering a 5-0 lead in the second game, the Royals pulled
it out on an RBI single by senior Kristen Williams (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury)
in the fourth inning and a strong relief effort from freshman
Alison Kucharski (Hampton, NJ/North
Hunterdon), who pitched an inning and two-thirds and did
not allow a hit while striking out two to earn her first save of
the season. Winning pitcher Jamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock)
allowed only three hits to improve to 7-5 on the year.
The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run home
run by sophomore catcher Jaquelynn Rossi (Eynon, Pa./Valley View), her
third of the season, and added three more runs in the third on RBI
singles by Williams, fellow senior Jamie Shackles (Philadelphia,
Pa./Little Flower), and Hampsey.
Aided by an error and two walks, the Cardinals tied it up in the
top of the fourth before Williams delivered in the bottom half to
the frame to set the final score.
Catholic, now 16-12 overall and 4-4 in the Landmark, received a hit
apiece from seniors Mel Galella (Edison, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) and
Taylor Stockinger (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and sophomore Tori
Marcavage (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley).
Williams, Shackles, and Hampsey paced the Royals’ 10-hit
attack with two hits apiece.
In the opener, Catholic exploded for six runs in the sixth inning
to erase a 5-1 deficit. Galella, freshman Christy Sanchez
(Miami, Fla./Carrollton School of Sacred Heart), and Marcavage each
belted a home run and senior Nina Curto (Pelham Manor, NY/The
Ursuline School) and sophomore Amy Laughner (Olney, Md./Sherwood)
had three hits apiece for the Cardinals.
Junior Caitlin McHenry (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Walter
Panas) had two hits, including her team-leading fourth
home run of the season, and sophomore Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford)
added a pair. Scranton is now 11-10 overall and 4-4 in the
Landmark Conference.
With one series remaining, the Royals and the Cardinals are tied
for third place in the battle for the top four spots for the
upcoming Landmark Conference tournament. Scranton will host
Susquehanna University next Saturday, April 27, at the Jessup Youth
Sports Complex beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The Royals will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
against the Knights of Neumann University at the Jessup Youth
Sports Complex. Williams and Shackles will be honored prior
to the start of the second game as part of Senior Day
festivities.
