Results
The University of Scranton men's tennis team clinched the
top seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference playoffs with a 9-0
victory over Goucher College on Sunday afternoon at sun-drenched
Royal Courts at DeNaples Fields.
The Royals finish the regular season 7-4 overall and 6-1 in
Landmark Conference play. They will host fourth-seeded Juniata in a
Landmark Conference semifinal on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Royal
Courts.
Scranton received two wins apiece from seniors Tim
McGurrin (Clarks Summit, Pa./Abington Heights),
Joe Morra (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Preparatory),
Mike Pannone (Maplewood, N.J./Seton Hall
Preparatory) and Bennett Kelley (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley
Central), as well as junior David
Teres (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon).
McGurrin won at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, and teamed with
Teres for an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles. Teres rallied for a 5-7,
6-1, 11-9 win at second singles. Morra and Pannone teamed for an
8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, with Morra winning, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3
singles and Pannone triumphing, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4.
Kelley teamed with freshman Michael
O'Malley (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers
Academy) for an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. Kelley also
posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.
The Royals also received a 6-1, 6-1 win from junior James Dalkiewicz (Shavertown, Pa./Lake-Lehman)
at No. 6 singles.
With the loss, Goucher fell to 5-14 overall and 1-6 in Landmark
play.
