JESSUP, Pa. – The University of Scranton and Moravian College softball teams played two vastly different games on Thursday, but in the end, the Greyhounds came out victorious in both, handing the Royals 3-1 and 19-11 losses at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex.

After a first game that was dominated by strong pitching and defense, the teams combined for 30 runs on 33 hits and seven errors in the night cap. Moravian (26-6, 7-3 Landmark) rallied from 3-0, 7-4 and 11-7 deficits by blasting five home runs in the game.

Scranton (7-18, 2-8 Landmark) scored all 11 runs in the first inning after being shut down for the first six innings in the opener. Junior center fielder Gabrielle Santarelli (Peckville, Pa./Valley View) finished the second game with a double, three singles and three runs scored, while freshman shortstop Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) had two singles, a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.

The Royals also received two singles and four RBIs from freshman designated player Angelica Titor (Bellerose Village, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) and a single, double and two RBIs from freshman catcher Jacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic). Junior second baseman Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, N.J./West Milford) also singled and scored three times.

In the opener, the Royals threatened in the first, putting two runners on base on singles by Romano and Stricker, but could not plate a run.

Moravian took the lead with three runs in the fourth, all with two outs. The Royals rallied in the seventh, breaking up the shutout when freshman Marisa Ciriello (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) delivered a pinch-hit RBI double with two outs.

Sophomore Alison Kucharski (Hampton, N.J./North Hunterdon) pitched well despite the fourth-inning hiccup. She allowed just those three runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out two.

Scranton is back in action on Friday when the Royals travel to New York, N.Y. to take on Hunter College at 3 p.m.
