SCRANTON, Pa.—Sophomore attacker Andrew Marone (Morristown, NJ/Seton Hall
Preparatory) owns family bragging rights after leading The
University of Scranton men’s lacrosse team to a 14-2 victory
over Drew University in Landmark Conference action Saturday
afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.
Playing against his older brother, Ranger senior attacker Mike
Marone (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton), the younger Marone finished with
a career-high four goals and an assists to help the Royals win
their third straight game to improve to 8-4 overall and remain
unbeaten in Landmark Conference with a 3-0 mark.
Scranton also received three goals and an assist from sophomore
midfielder Alec
Mikrut (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery), two goals from
senior attacker Gus
Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conestoga), a goal and two assists
from junior Will
Mahle (Montgomery, NJ/Montgomery), and a goal and an
assist from sophomore midfielder Anthony Lombardo (Mendham, NJ/Mendham).
Drew, now 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the Landmark, received a goal
apiece from Marone and senior attacker Andrew Somps (East Lyme,
Conn./East Lyme).
Marone scored in the first period as the Royals open up a 2-1 lead,
then added a pair during a two-minute span late in the second
period Scranton broke it open with six goals to build up an 8-1
halftime lead.
The Royals dominated the game in nearly every statistical category,
winning 13 of 19 face-off—including 13 of 18 by junior
Matt Finor (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock
South)—out-shooting the Rangers 34-13, and holding a
48-32 advantage in ground balls.
Scranton also received a goal apiece from senior midfielder
Matt Tibbitts (West Hartford,
Conn./Conard), freshman attacker Brian
Quinn (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), and sophomore attacker
Andrew Callaghan (Maplewood, NJ/St.
Peter’s Preparatory) and two assists from senior
John Gregitis (Wayne,  Pa./St.
Joseph’s Preparatory).
Defensively, the Royal backline of senior Ryan
Saraceni (Lansdale, Pa./LaSalle) and juniors
Colin Panayi (Bedminister, NJ/Bernards)
and Ryan Millard (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris
Central) allowed the Rangers only five shots on goal,
three of which were saves by Scranton junior goalkeeper Nicholas McKaba (Long Valley, NJ/West
Morris).
The Royals will return to action Wednesday, April 9, against
Franklin & Marshall College beginning at 7:00 p.m. at
Fitzpatrick Field.
