WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Senior Stephanie Klug (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) had a match-high 16 kills to pace the attack, as the University of Scranton volleyball team captured their fifth straight match at Lycoming on Tuesday night in four sets (25-16, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16).
The win, which was Scranton's seventh in their last nine matches, pushed the Royals' record on the year to 25-9 overall. Lycoming fell to 17-12 with the defeat.
In the victory, Scranton controlled play in the first two sets to open a 2-0 lead. In the first set, the Royals opened up an 18-11 lead late and never looked back, then followed that up the second game by going up 18-12 in a seven point triumph.
Poised to end the match in three, Scranton once again took a lead in the middle of the third set, going up 18-15 on the host Warriors. But, Lycoming roared back to stay alive, taking a narrow two point win to send things to a fourth game.
But there, Scranton regained their form, opening up a 20-10 lead late and never looking back in a dominating nine point victory to take the match over Lycoming in four.
Overall, Klug's 16-kill performance was her second best in the category on the year, as she also posted three block-assists on the evening, (Scranton had 12 blocks total in the win), and three service aces, as well.
Elsewhere, freshman Kristin Kirwan (Park Ridge, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) also had a big night, slamming home 15 kills for her 12th double-digit kill match of the year.
Junior setter Brittany Cafiero (Merrick, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) once again went over 30 assists in a match, finishing with 36 to push her total on the year to over 900 (904). Also with her night, Cafiero went over 2,000 assists for her career (2,004), making her one of just six University of Scranton student-athletes all-time to hit that milestone.
The University of Scranton volleyball team returns to action on Saturday, taking on both Gallaudet and Lebanon Valley in the program's final regular season matches of the year. The Gallaudet match will start at 11 a.m., followed by the Lebanon Valley contest at 3 p.m.
