Lady Royals Never Trail in 74-55 Triumph at King's

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Junior forward Alexix Roman (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) poured in a game-high 25 points and snatched a career-high 12 rebounds, leading the 22nd-ranked University of Scranton women's basketball team to a commanding 74-55 victory over Kings in out-of-conference action at McGrane Gymnasium on Monday night.

With the win, Scranton improved to a perfect 5-0 on the young season, while King's fell to 4-1 with the defeat.

In a game in which they never trailed, Scranton leaped out to a 13-0 lead in the first five minutes of regulation and never looked back the rest of the night. In fact, the closest King's came to the Scranton lead the rest of the game was six points (17-11 at the end of the first quarter).

After opening up a 37-26 lead at intermission, Scranton put away King's for good in the third quarter, as they extended the lead out to 13 points early in the period (41-28). From there, the Lady Royals coasted over the final 16 minutes of action to notch a 19-point win on the road.

Overall, Roman was dominant yet again inside for Scranton, going 11-for-14 from the floor and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to notch her 25-point evening. Meanwhile, the junior pulled down 12 rebounds to notch her second straight double-double.

It marked the third time on the short season that Roman has gone over 20-points in a contest, while her 25 point-output is the highest of the season for the junior.

Elsewhere, senior guard Noelle Alicea (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) scored 16 points (on 11-of-12 shooting from the free throw line) with seven rebounds, and junior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) added 14 points, with seven rebounds and seven assists (matching a career-high).

Rounding out the double-digit scorers for Scranton was senior guard Jaclyn Gantz (Havertown, Pa./Haverford), who finished with 11 points and five rebounds.

On the defensive end, the Lady Royals once again had a strong night, holding King's to just 34.4 percent shooting from the floor on the evening.

The University of Scranton women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, as they travel to Juniata for their 2015-16 Landmark Conference season opener. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
