Roman Pours in 30 Points, as Lady Royals Roll Past Emory & Henry at Las Vegas Hoopla

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Junior forward Alexix Roman (Hawley, Pa./Wallenpaupack) poured in a game-high 30 points to match a career-high, as the No. 16 University of Scranton women's basketball team remained unbeaten on the year with a convincing 86-57 victory over Emory & Henry as part of the 2015 Las Vegas Hoopla tournament on Sunday afternoon.

With the victory, the Lady Royals moved to 10-0 on the season to continue their best start to a campaign since 2003-04. Emory & Henry fell to 6-1 with the loss.

After a close first quarter in which Scranton held a slim three-point lead entering the second (18-15), Emory & Henry remained within distance of the Lady Royal lead with seven minutes left in the half, as Scranton held a 26-22 lead. Here, the Lady Royals began a furious scoring run to end the second period, finishing on a 17-7 spurt to a take a 14-point lead into the break for halftime at 43-29.

Throughout the second half, Scranton continued to lead by double-figures throughout, eventually ballooning it out to 20 points at 59-39 with 2:51 left. From there, it was academic for the Lady Royals, as they coasted down the stretch in a game in which they never trailed.

Overall, Roman notched her 30-point afternoon on 13-of-19 shooting from the floor, as she led the Lady Royals in scoring for the eighth time in 10 games. She has also scored in double-figures in all 10 games on the year for Scranton, as well.

Elsewhere, fellow junior forward Sarah Payonk (Schwenksville, Pa./Spring-Ford) notched her second straight double-double in the win, scoring 12 points, while snatching 13 rebounds. Payonk also dished out four assists in the win.

As a team, Scranton shot well all day, ending the game shooting at a 59.6 percent clip (the Lady Royals shot 63 percent in the first half). Meanwhile, the Scranton defense allowed Emory & Henry to shoot just 35.6 percent from the floor and 22.2 percent from three-point range (4-of-18).

The University of Scranton women's basketball team finishes off play at the Las Vegas Hoopla on Monday afternoon, as they take on Bridgewater. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. EST.
