CLERMONT, Fla.—The University of Scranton softball team ended an 8-game Spring Break trip today, downing Fredonia St. (NY), 5-2, before suffering a 1-0 loss to D’Youville College (NY).
Freshman Kaitlyn Pittsman (Jefferson Township, Pa./North Pocono) belted a pair of doubles and drove in two runs and junior pitcherJamie Hampsey (Tunkhannock, Pa./Tunkhannock) scattered 10 hits and allowed only one earned run in the win over Fredonia St. Hampsey is now 3-0 on the mound this year.
The Royals scored all five of their runs in the first three innings, as Pittsman hit an RBI double in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1 and ignited a four-run rally in the third with another run-scoring double. Scranton also took advantage of four errors by Fredonia St. to score four unearned runs.
Sophomore Kaitlin O’Sullivan (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy) had a hit and scored twice and sophomores Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan) andJacqueline DeSarro (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) each singled and scored a run for the Royals.
In the nightcap, Scranton freshman pitcher Morgan Rentzheimer (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) was brilliant in defeat, striking out a season-high 11 batters and did not allow an earned run. She got out of a jam in the first inning, inducing a fly ball and striking out the next two batters after D’Youville put runners on second and third with no outs. Rentzheimer also struck out the sides in the second inning and D’Youville’s winning run was set up by a passed ball that allowed runners to advance to second and third.
Scranton had an opportunity to tie it in the fourth, but stranded runners on second and third with only one out.
D’Youville pitcher Kalie McHenry was impressive, too, striking out eight and allowing only three hits—all singles by Royal designated hitter Angelica Titor (Bellerose Village, NY/Floral Park Memorial).
Stricker’s 14-game hitting streak that dated back to last year was snapped today in the loss to D’Youville.
Weather-permitting, the Royals will open their Landmark Conference schedule this Saturday, March 21, against Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
