JESSUP, Pa.—The University of Scranton softball team dropped a pair of games to Susquehanna University in Landmark Conference action today at the Jessup Youth Sports Complex.
In the opener, the Royals tied it up in the sixth inning, but the Crusaders pulled out a 2-1 victory in eight innings. In the nightcap, Scranton managed only four hits off Susquehanna sophomore pitcher Jamie Fesinstine (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) and suffered a 5-0 setback.
Susquehanna, now 20-5 overall and 9-1 in the Landmark Conference, took a 1-0 lead in the first game after Kelly Miller (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) doubled in the fifth inning and pinch-runner Danielle Vollono (Bethpage, NY/Long Island Lutheran) scored on a sacrifice fly by Leigh Ann Greenwald (Piscataway, NJ/Immaculata).
In the eighth inning, senior Alyssa Cantalini (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic Secondary) doubles, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice, and scored the game-winning run on a ground out to the right-side of the Royal defense by freshman Heather Pearson (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton).
Senior Stephanie Romano (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford) had two of Scranton’s six hits and senior Gabrielle Santarelli (Jessup, Pa./Valley View) drove in the Royals’ lone run with a double.
Winning pitcher Morgan Lewis (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) struck out five and walked only two in improving to 11-3 on the season.
In the second game, the Royals committed two costly errors that allowed the Crusaders to score three unearned runs. Seniors Brianna Murphy (Hazlet, NJ/Mater Dei Prep) and Bridget Rafter (Highlands, NJ/Immaculata), Pearson and Cantalini combined for eight of the Crusaders’ 12 hits.
Sophomore Christine Kiefer (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) belted a double and sophomore Shannon Stricker (Morrisville, Pa./Conwell Egan), Santarelli and Romano had the other three hits for Scranton, now 12-10 overall and 4-4 in the Landmark Conference.
The Royals will travel to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Sunday to take on Moravian College in a Landmark Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
