LAPLUME, Pa. – The University of Scranton wrestling team won the final seven matches of the evening to roll past Keystone, 39-6, on Thursday evening in Gambal Athletic Center.
The Royals (1-0) had three pins, a technical fall and major decision while winning the team's first dual meet of the season.
Junior Nicholas DePierro (Manalapan, N.J./Freehold) got the Royals started with a pin at 125 poudns and junior Zachary D'Apolito (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley Senior) added a pin at 174, as did freshman Keegan Connelly (Schnecksville, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) at 197.
Sophomore Daniel D'Agostini (Allentown, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) rolled to a technical fall, 20-3, at 184 pounds, and freshman John Sheedy (Somerset, N.J./Bishop George Ahr H.S.) won by major decision, 17-5, at 149 pounds.
Scranton also received victories by decision from senior Ian Evans (Laurys Station, Pa./Parkland) at 157 and sophomore Andrew Gombas (Warren, N.J./Bound Brook) at 165. Evans' victory was the 96th of his career, the second-most in program history and moving him within four wins of becoming just the second wrestler in Scranton history with 100 career wins.
Evans will have a shot at the milestone on Saturday when the Royals host the Electric City Duals beginning at 10 a.m. The five-team, round-robin tournament will feature two mats and four matches per team.
